Creating, Planning, & Editing A Commercial for Smile Structure Dentistry

As a photographer accustomed to capturing still moments, transitioning to the dynamic world of commercial video was both a thrilling and eye-opening journey. It’s an area that I’ve wanted to pursue for quite some time! Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how it all unfolded.

When Smile Structure approached me with the idea of creating a commercial, I was instantly intrigued. Known for their top-notch dental care and friendly service, Smile Structure wanted to produce a commercial that was both unique and comical. The goal was clear: to present a satirical take on the typical dental visit. With only an idea in hand, I took on multiple roles for this project — creator, producer, scriptwriter, sound engineer, recruiter, director, and editor. Whew!

From the get-go, the pace was swift. Planning meetings, brainstorming sessions, and location scouting were all packed into the schedule. Finally, the planning phase was complete and the date was set! We rallied the crew on a rainy Friday morning and 4-hours later, we had plenty of footage to call it a wrap. The process was incredibly organized, thanks to my videographer Blake Purcell (Balakay) and the collaborative spirit of the Smile Structure team.

Looking Ahead

This first foray into commercial video has opened up a world of possibilities. I’m excited to see where this new path will lead and look forward to future projects that will continue to challenge and inspire me. A huge thank you to Smile Structure for trusting me with their vision and for making the experience so enjoyable.
